- Overview
What is a Tummy Tuck?
The abdomen is one of the areas most affected by pregnancy, significant weight loss and the natural ageing process. Loose skin, weakened abdominal muscles and stubborn fat deposits can leave the midsection looking and feeling completely different to how it once did — and no amount of exercise can reverse these changes once they have occurred.
A tummy tuck, medically known as abdominoplasty, is one of the most effective and consistently rewarding procedures in aesthetic surgery. It removes excess skin from the abdomen, repairs and tightens separated or weakened abdominal muscles, and sculpts the midsection into a flatter, firmer and more defined shape. The result is not just cosmetic — many patients report a significant improvement in comfort, posture and physical confidence.
At Dr. Orman’s clinic, every tummy tuck is personalised to the individual patient. The extent of skin removal, the degree of muscle repair and whether liposuction is combined with the procedure are all decisions made specifically around your anatomy, your goals and what will produce the most natural and proportionate result for your body.
Excess Skin Removal
Permanently removes the loose, sagging skin from the abdomen that no amount of exercise or weight loss can address.
Muscle Repair
Repairs separated or weakened abdominal muscles — a common result of pregnancy — restoring core strength, improving posture and creating a genuinely flatter midsection.
Sculpted Contour
Combined with liposuction where appropriate, a tummy tuck sculpts a naturally defined and proportionate abdominal contour.
Dramatic, Lasting Results
The structural changes made during a tummy tuck are permanent. With a stable weight the results are designed to last for many years.
Improved Comfort
Beyond aesthetics, many patients report significant improvements in physical comfort, posture and the ability to exercise more effectively following their tummy tuck.
- Who Is Suitable
Is a tummy tuck right for you?
A tummy tuck is one of the most rewarding procedures in aesthetic surgery but it works best for specific concerns and specific candidates. Here is what Dr. Orman looks for when assessing suitability.
Good candidates are typically:
- At or close to their stable ideal weight for at least 6 months
- In good general health with no unmanaged underlying medical conditions
- Non-smokers or willing to stop smoking well in advance of surgery
- Experiencing loose or excess abdominal skin following pregnancy or significant weight loss
- Dealing with separated or weakened abdominal muscles that exercise has not been able to restore
- Struggling with stubborn lower abdominal fat that does not respond to diet or exercise
- Those who have completed their family and are not planning further pregnancies
- Holding realistic expectations about outcomes, recovery time and scarring
You may wish to wait if:
- You are planning further pregnancies as this will significantly affect your results
- You are planning significant further weight loss as your results will be better if achieved at your stable weight
- You smoke and are not willing to stop before and after surgery
- You have unmanaged health conditions that may affect anaesthesia or healing
- Your concerns are limited to stubborn fat without excess skin in which case liposuction alone may be more appropriate
- You are not prepared for a longer recovery compared to less extensive procedures
- The Procedure
What happens during your tummy tuck procedure?
A tummy tuck is a carefully planned surgical procedure that requires both technical skill and an artistic eye for proportion. Here is a step by step overview of what to expect.

Consultation & Planning
Before surgery, Dr. Orman conducts a thorough consultation to assess your abdominal anatomy, skin quality, muscle condition and goals. The incision placement and extent of the procedure are planned specifically around your body to deliver the most natural and proportionate result while keeping scarring as discreet as possible.

Anaesthesia
A tummy tuck is performed under general anaesthesia in an internationally accredited private hospital in Istanbul. You will be completely comfortable and unaware throughout the entire procedure.

Incision
A carefully placed incision is made along the lower abdomen, positioned as low as possible so it can be concealed beneath underwear or swimwear. The length and position of the incision depends on the extent of skin removal required and is planned meticulously during your consultation.

Muscle Repair
Where abdominal muscles have become separated or weakened, Dr. Orman repairs and tightens them back to their correct position. This is one of the most important steps of the procedure as it creates the genuinely flat and firm foundation that gives a tummy tuck its transformative result.

Skin Removal and Sculpting
Excess skin is carefully removed from the abdomen. Where liposuction is part of your treatment plan, Dr. Orman sculpts the surrounding areas simultaneously to ensure the overall contour is balanced and proportionate.

Closing and Compression
The remaining skin is repositioned and all incisions are carefully closed. A compression garment is applied to support the treated area, minimise swelling and help the skin conform to its new contours. You are then moved to your private recovery room.
- The Recovery
What to expect during your tummy tuck recovery.
Tummy tuck recovery requires patience but most patients find the results more than worth the process. Being well prepared for your recovery is an important part of achieving the best possible outcome.
Timeline:
Days 1–3
Swelling, bruising and tightness across the abdomen is completely normal. Pain is well managed with prescribed medication. You will remain in Istanbul under medical supervision, wearing your compression garment continuously and resting as much as possible. Light walking is gently encouraged from day one to support circulation.
Week 1–2
Swelling begins to reduce and bruising starts to fade. Most patients feel more comfortable moving around but should avoid any activity that places strain on the abdomen. You will attend a follow-up appointment with Dr. Orman before returning home.
Week 2–6
Most patients can manage light daily activities and return to desk work from around week 3. Compression garments continue to be worn. Results become increasingly visible as swelling reduces and the abdomen settles into its new shape.
Month 1–3
Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided until cleared by Dr. Orman, typically around 6 to 8 weeks. The abdomen continues to improve in shape and firmness as residual swelling resolves. Scars begin to fade and soften.
Final Results
Final tummy tuck results are typically fully visible between 4 and 6 months after surgery. The flat, firm and sculpted abdomen you and Dr. Orman discussed is now fully revealed.
Activities to avoid during recovery:
- Any abdominal exercise or heavy lifting for at least 6 to 8 weeks
- Removing your compression garment before advised
- Swimming or submerging incisions in water for at least 6 weeks
- Sleeping flat on your back in the first few days — a slightly reclined position is more comfortable
- Smoking throughout the entire recovery period
- Significant weight fluctuations which can affect your results
Your abdomen carried everything. It is time it finally reflected how far you have come.
- Why a Tummy Tuck
More than a flatter stomach. A completely renewed confidence.
A tummy tuck addresses what exercise simply cannot — and the results speak for themselves.
Permanently Flat Abdomen
Removes the loose, excess skin that no amount of exercise or dieting can address, delivering a permanently flatter and firmer midsection.
Restored Core Strength
Repairing separated abdominal muscles does more than improve appearance. It restores core strength, improves posture and makes everyday movement feel easier and more comfortable.
Proportionate Sculpting
Dr. Orman combines the tummy tuck with liposuction where appropriate to ensure the entire midsection looks naturally sculpted and balanced, not just flat.
Results That Last
The structural changes made during a tummy tuck are permanent. With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, your results are designed to endure for many years.
Improved Quality of Life
Beyond aesthetics, patients consistently report improvements in physical comfort, the ability to exercise more effectively and a renewed confidence in how they feel and move every day.

- FAQs
Everything you need to know before taking the next step.
We understand that choosing a surgeon is one of the most important decisions you will make. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often.
Liposuction removes fat but does not address loose skin or weakened muscles. A tummy tuck removes excess skin, repairs the abdominal muscles and can include liposuction as part of the same procedure. If you have loose skin or separated muscles following pregnancy or weight loss, a tummy tuck will deliver a far more complete result than liposuction alone.
A tummy tuck does leave a scar along the lower abdomen. Dr. Orman places the incision as low as possible so it can be concealed beneath underwear or swimwear. Scars are an expected and manageable part of the outcome and continue to fade and soften significantly over 12 to 18 months following surgery.
It is possible but not recommended. Future pregnancies will stretch the abdominal muscles and skin that were tightened during your tummy tuck, affecting your results. Dr. Orman advises patients to wait until their family is complete before undergoing the procedure for the best and most lasting outcome.
Ideally you should be at or close to your stable target weight before surgery. A tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure. It is a contouring procedure that works best when your weight is already stable. Losing significant weight after surgery can also affect your results.
Yes. Repairing diastasis recti — the separation of the abdominal muscles that commonly occurs during pregnancy — is one of the most important elements of a tummy tuck. Many patients report a significant improvement in core strength, posture and physical comfort following this repair.
Yes. A tummy tuck is very commonly combined with liposuction of the flanks and surrounding areas, breast procedures or as part of a mommy makeover. Combining procedures allows for a more comprehensive result with a single recovery period.
Cost depends on the specific elements of your treatment plan including whether liposuction is combined with the procedure. Dr. Orman provides fully transparent, all-inclusive pricing during your consultation covering surgery, hospital fees, accommodation, transfers and aftercare with no hidden costs.
